Snow in Your Hand

You were a leaf on a stream, that stopped and kissed my shoe

Who would gently come back when I wanted to feel water

You loved me, I know you did

In your soft hold, I was yours from the start

I quietly promised you that

With an adoring look, you in the driver’s seat

Turning corners like a taxi driver

I was not water in your hands

I was snow

Radiant and pure

That you knew would melt

Still, each time, you scooped me back up

Just because I missed you

You were not here to stay, but you were never fickle

With us, there was safety even if we were transient

Since August, it has been too warm

And I’ve hardly shoveled my car

But, I remember you in the weeks before spring

And in my hand, you are a pebble

That I carry with me
